In response to the growing shortage of critical medical supplies both in Germany and around the world, many family-owned businesses are dramatically pivoting their operations to fill essential societal needs. A consultant in Deloitte Germany, Luca Schaller, took three weeks’ leave at the height of the local coronavirus outbreak to help his father’s business quickly transform from a supplier of automotive parts to one of protective masks.
Luca drew on his consulting expertise to help his father’s business produce a new and unfamiliar product at volume in a short period of time. At a time when businesses were contracting and unemployment rates were soaring worldwide, the Schallers were able to hire an additional thirty employees to help with the effort. Working with his father’s company, Luca not only helped increase access to masks and medical equipment but also provided workers with new jobs and financial security.
“This project fills me with pride,” says Luca. “We started in a development phase, but then we had to scale really quickly, making 10,000 masks a day. We also sent masks to Warsaw, Poland and the Ukraine.”
